Chapter 23

Noah

Life has been hectic in the best way since Clara returned. Looking back at the lousy decisions I made; makes me despise myself a little more each day.

Take Luci, for example. I put my daughter on the back burner and then forgot about her. I should have been there helping her cope with her mother's death. But I was too focused on hating the world and everyone in it. If Clara hadn't shown back up when she did, I don't know if I would have ever gotten my daughter back.

I'm pulled from my thoughts when I hear the bathroom door open, and heat rises in my chest when I see my wife in her pink nighty. The silky material graciously contours her every curve.

I remain seated on the bed as she steps closer to me, and I pull her into my lap. I tuck a strand of hair behind her ear before running the backs of my fingers down her soft cheek.

"Today was very emotional," she says, wrapping her arms around my neck.

"I know. How are you holding up?"

"Good," she answers, but I can hear the doubt. "Do you think I'll ever remember anything?"

I smile and give the only answer I can. "Of course, you will. Amnesia can be caused by a head injury, which I have no doubt you suffered from. But as crazy as it sounds, I think a small part of you is afraid to remember."

She looks into my eyes and nods. "I'll agree to that. I want to remember, but I'm afraid whoever did this felt there was a reason I deserved it. What if I did something-"

I instantly hold up my hand. "Stop," I reply a little too harshly, making her gulp. "Don't ever say that again, Clara. You haven't done a thing to deserve the torture you went through." She gives me a weak smile but I can still see the doubt in her eyes.

“Oh, that reminds me,” I tap her knee and she shifts allowing me to stand up. I walk over to the closet and pull out our wedding picture that is still in the frame. I still remember the day I pulled it off the wall and stuffed it in the closet. It just hurt too damn much to look at.

I step over to Clara and show her the photo, watching as a teary-eyed smile forms. “We had a beautiful wedding, Noah.”

“Yes, we did. I’ll never forget the way you looked in that dress, Clara.” Clara’s V-neck long-sleeve lace ball gown made her look like a princess. Clara’s favorite color was and always will be pink which was the color she picked for the flowers and bridesmaids’ gowns.

“You look so handsome Noah,” she says. “But just like the picture Luci showed me, you had short hair. When did you decide to grow it out?”

I sit next to her rubbing my palms. “The day you died, at least the day I thought you did. I guess you could say I just stopped caring about the simple things.
